Natural Wonders

Santorini island sightseeing doesn’t have to be glamorous. Some of the best things to see in Santorini are natural wonders. The island’s history, topography, and climate make it the perfect playground for adventure-seekers

Our map of Santorini includes a couple of incredible options to experience the natural world.

Santorini Volcano

It isn’t often that you have an opportunity to visit an active volcano! These are some of the most popular Santorini sightseeing tours.

If you take a look at the Santorini island map, you’ll appreciate how the volcano has shaped the region’s morphology. Volcanic eruptions here have been responsible for decimating thriving populations, creating a series of islands, and adding unique characteristics to the region’s beaches.

One of the most important byproducts of volcanic eruptions at Santorini is the caldera – or crater. While the active volcano lies underwater, one of the amazing things to do in Santorini is to visit the black lava islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni. view of Santorini volcanic islands in the distance, caldera

These tiny islands are the result of the volcano’s most recent activity. When visiting Nea Kameni, you’ll have a chance to hike across the black lava rocks. At Palaia Kameni, you’ll get to enjoy the therapeutic effects of sulfur hot springs. Enjoy your mud bath while you take in the sweeping caldera views.

You’ll find an assortment of fabulous beaches on the map of Santorini beaches. From rocky shores to black sands, there’s something for everyone! Luckily for budget travelers, visiting beaches is one of the best free things to do in Santorini.

If you are looking for beaches with premier amenities, consider Kamari Beach or Perissa Beach. Both beaches feature distinct black sands and offer access to lounging, restaurants, water sports, and a variety of other activities. They are located on the Eastern shores of Santorini, not far from one another.

Experience horseback ridging on the beach in Santorini.

Red beach in Santorini

Kamari features a more refined experience while Perissa offers a more relaxed, party vibe. Visiting Perissa Beach is one of the recommended things to do in Santorini for families since there is a water park on-site.

The Red Beach is the best place in Santorini to see sparkling red sands. It’s considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, and it’s located near the Akrotiri archeological site. This is a rocky and narrow beach without amenities.

Red beach in Santorini

Perivolos Beach is the best place to escape the crowds. Located on the southeastern side of Santorini, Perivolos has some amenities but much generally fewer tourists. You can get sun loungers and drinks, as well as entertainment and rentals. The shores are a bit pebbly with characteristic black sands. Visiting a beach is one of the best things to do in Santorini Greece.

Akrotiri Lighthouse

Visiting the Akrotiri Lighthouse is one of the interesting things to do in Santorini Greece. It’s located at the Southwestern tip of the island near the Akrotiri site. You can get there in a 45-minutes driving from Oia or 30-minutes driving from Imerovigli.

Akrotiri Lighthouse

This privileged spot offers some breathtaking views of the Santorini coastline. The lighthouse was built in 1892 and is the oldest lighthouse on the island. It remained in operation until WWII.

Watching the sunset here is one of the unmissable activities to do in Santorini Greece. Imagine caldera cliffs, red beaches, and volcanic islands in the distance. Bring your swimsuit and take an evening swim on the red beach. This is one of the best places to visit in Santorini Greece during sunset.

Ancient History

No detailed map of Santorini would be complete without including the unique archeological sites on the island. While you visit Santorini, you won’t miss the giant crater that makes up its topography.

The Santorini crater is a reminder of a massive volcanic eruption that took place around 1600 BC. The eruption obliterated life on the island, but the ash cloud resulting from the eruption served to protect some of the art and architecture of the Minoan people.

The Minoans are a bronze age civilization that inhabited Santorini island as early as 2,000 to 3,000 BC. It is due to their fascinating history that many of the Santorini points of interest are archeology museums.

Visiting archeological sites and museums are some of the most fascinating things to do in Santorini island.

Akrotiri site

Akrotiri is located on the southwest side of Santorini. It’s a 30-minute drive from Imerovigli and a 45-minute drive from Oia.

The Akrotiri site is one of the most important Santorini tourist spots. It is the most well-known Minoan site outside of Crete. At Akrotiri, scientists have unveiled multi-level structures, streets, and walls reaching 8-meters. It’s pretty mind-blowing to think that this was built 4,000 years ago!

Archeologists have discovered loom workshops, masterful masonry work, and ornate wall paintings at Akrotiri. This civilization had running water and advanced pipe systems! You’ll also get to see impressive objects such as pottery and furniture.

Discover why this site is one of the Santorini top attractions.

Museum of Prehistoric Thira

The Museum of Prehistoric Thira is located in Firostefani on this tourist map of Santorini. It’s one of the top-rated things to see in Santorini for history buffs. The museum displays a huge collection of art and objects recovered from the Akrotiri archeological site

If you don’t have time to visit the archeological site during your Santorini sightseeing, be sure to stop by the (more conveniently located) museum.

As you explore the museum, you’ll walk through time starting all the way back in 3300 BC! You’ll be impressed by the delicate jewelry, sturdy ceramics, ornate ritual objects, and exquisite paintings. There are also some early examples of Cycladic marble figurines. Visiting this museum is one of the top things to do in Santorini Greece.

Thera site

The Thera site is one of the lesser-known Santorini attractions. While it is one of the most interesting Santorini Greece attractions, visiting here is one of the most uncommon things to do on Santorini island.

The Thera site is the second most important archeological site on the island. It’s located at the top of Mesa Vouno Mountain and offers fantastic coastal views. This is where the Spartans arrived in 8000 BC. They built paved roads, drainage systems, and minestrone buildings.

Within the archeological complex, you can view the remains of an ancient theater, bathhouses, a market, and several religious monuments (pagan and Christian). Getting up close and personal to this sophisticated prehistoric society is a must-do in Santorini.

Visiting the Thera site is one of the fun and educational things to do in Santorini with kids.

Archeological Museum of Thera

Located in the town of Fira on this Santorini attractions map, the Archeological Museum of Thera is the best place to view objects recovered from the Thera site. Particularly if you don’t have time to visit the Thera site, the museum is one of the recommended places to see in Santorini.

Much of the artifacts at the museum come from the excavations at Mesa Vouno Mountain. Statues, clay figurines, amphoras, and cookware items have been recovered. Some vases were recovered from Akrotiri. These are some of the top things to see in Santorini.

This is a small and centrally located museum that’s well worth your time. Visiting here is one of the best things to do on Santorini’s hot, sunny afternoons.
